SJI-KC: Giving children a voice and their families a choice.

Established in 1995, St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf – KC (SJI-KC) offers children with hearing loss and their parents the only listening and spoken language communication and therapy option in the Greater Kansas City area.  Teaching these children how to use their assistive hearing devices and their brains how to listen and speak – the foundation for literacy–is the core of our staff expertise and main objective of our program.

One of three St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf system schools in the nation, the Kansas City campus provides a child-centered focus with an emphasis on parent involvement through a variety of services delivered by teachers of the deaf and speech language pathologists with advanced degrees and many years of experience in the listening and spoken language approach:

  • Early intervention services for children birth to age three
  • Independent Schools of the Central States (ISACS) accredited academic programs for preschool through early elementary
  • Listening and speech and language therapy
  • Expertise in cochlear implants and hearing aids
  • Summer enrichment program
  • Outreach transition services
  • Mainstream support through local school partnerships
