Empowering Children for a Lifetime

Mainstreaming for a child with hearing loss begins at infancy in their family environment and continues through a process of participation in community.  St. Joseph Institute (SJI) contributes to this process by empowering children with hearing loss to pursue their educational and social potential by helping them develop communication, academic and personal skills.

The primary goal at SJI is to transition each student to full-time enrollment in a mainstream school. Many of our students academically mainstream at an early age due to advances in assistive technology, early intervention and the quality of our program.

Our accredited academic program offers a wide variety of personal and community growth activities such as field trips, school plays, special events and athletics that give students the experience and the confidence to fully engage in a mainstream educational environment.

Ongoing Support on the Mainstream Journey

When a student is ready to begin the mainstream program (typically one or two years before mainstream placement), a mainstream coordinator provides a guided academic and social transition plan. Options may include partial academic placement in a mainstream school while education and support services continue at SJI.

Once mainstreamed full-time, the coordinator continues to provide in-services with the mainstream school faculty, classroom observation and tutoring.

SJI also offers a wide range of consultation services, onsite and Internet therapies and tutoring.
