Accredited Academics, Specialized Support
St. Joseph Institute’s full-day school in St. Louis provides children with hearing loss, preschool through eighth grade, with an auditory-oral education with certified educators in listening and spoken language.
With the goal of having each student transition to a mainstream education, the academic experience is similar to that of a traditional elementary school including core courses, enrichment classes and personal and community growth activities. SJI maintains a student/teacher ratio of approximately 4:1 with a full complement of academic subjects taught by trained educators of the deaf.
Subjects include:
- Core academic classes
- Intensive language
- Individual speech therapy or speech instruction
- Computer center
- Science
- Fine arts
- Accelerated reading
- Physical Education
SJI is the only school for the deaf to be fully accredited by the prestigious Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS). The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has accredited SJI, which meets the Missouri school knowledge standards and educational performance goals.
In addition to academics, each child receives daily individual speech and langauge audition therapy from a speech/language pathologist or a certified teacher of the deaf. The combination of school classes and daily speech therapy gives children an expanding base of language on which communication and learning can build.
State-of-the-Art Technologies
State of the art technologies, such as sound field FM, infrared amplification and Smart Board* technologies, optimize the learning environment for children with cochlear implants or hearing aids. The on-site audiology clinic assists students with their hearing devices throughout the day to ensure they are “on the air” at optimal hearing capacity.
High Expectations, Reaching Potentials
Teachers set high expectations for their students and do everything possible to help children achieve their potential. Students are tested regularly to ensure that language acquisition progresses at an appropriate rate and that the students are becoming effective communicators.
Parents play an important role in their child’s education and observe classes once per semester and communicate with the teachers on a regular basis.
