Facilities Assistant

Summary

For nearly two centuries, St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf (SJI) has delivered exceptional listening and spoken language solutions for children with hearing loss, reflecting the charism of the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet. The Facilities Assistant plays a key role supporting the Indiana facility. Working under the direction of the Chief Program Officer, the Facilities Assistant will demonstrate knowledge and expertise in addressing the SJI facility needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintaining equipment and ensuring plumbing and lighting systems are working. 
  • Assisting with setting up and taking down for events and managing reservations. 
  • Taking inventory of supplies and goods and requesting reorders.
  • Carrying out risk assessments on facilities and making repairs if necessary.
  • Move and assemble furniture in preparation for carpet cleaning and classroom relocations.
  • Hang shelving units, install child safety anchors, and complete other installation tasks.
     
  • Carrying out monthly tasks, including but not limited to:
    • Safety check of fire hydrants
    • Safety check of Carbon Monoxide detectors
       
  • Carrying out weekly tasks, including but not limited to:
    • Check interior and exterior door locks
    • Walk through central areas and classrooms and note needed repairs
    • Complete an electrical outlet cover audit
    • Complete playground risk assessment
    • Provide weekly preventative maintenance to pipes in designated classroom(s)
    • Clean front doors
    • Check tool kit and locate missing items
    • Check lights and replace/order new bulbs 
    • Check student restroom fans  
    • Check under sinks for leaks or signs of damage 
    • Check ceilings for signs of new moisture/leaks 

Education, Training, Skills, and Experience

  • Two or more years of experience in facilities services preferred.
  • Well-organized with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently
