Preschool Teacher of the Deaf

JOB TITLE: Preschool Teacher of the Deaf             REPORTS TO:  LSL Program Coordinator

STATUS:  Full-Time, 194 Contract Days                    LOCATION:  IN Campus

Summary:

For nearly two centuries, St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf (SJI) has delivered exceptional listening and spoken language solutions for children with hearing loss, reflecting the charism of the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet.

We are looking for a dynamic preschool TOD to join our educational team. The ideal candidate will create a nurturing and stimulating environment for young children, fostering their social, emotional, and cognitive development. This role involves planning and implementing engaging lessons that meet the developmental needs of preschool-aged children with hearing loss, while ensuring a safe and inclusive classroom atmosphere. This is a listening and spoken language program and does not use sign language.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and implement an appropriate education program for each child in class.
  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and individualizes lessons to meet the needs of each child.
  • Develop annual goals for each student designed to enable the child to reach his/her full potential in all areas.
  • Collaborate in a positive way with other service providers, classroom teaching assistant, supervisor and departmental staff to ensure continuity and integration of curriculum at each instructional level.
  • Evaluate and document student progress on a regular basis.
  • Assess family needs and develop and implement plans to benefit the child and family.
  • Maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning, provide differentiated experiences to meet variable needs and abilities of students.
  • Uses effective classroom management techniques; uses appropriate behavioral management strategies for each child.
  • Prepare progress reports based on assessment and observation of child development, including academic, social pragmatic, self-advocacy and listening and spoken development.
  • Maintain necessary records and files and writes reports as required. Support in preparation of IEP goals, documentation and evaluations per standards set in department; meets with parents to discuss goals, objectives and to report progress.
  • Attend and actively participate in faculty and department meetings.
  • Provide information as needed to the IEP team.
  • Develop good rapport with family members, allowing them to become advocates for their child.
  • Provide parent education related to hearing loss and communication.
  • Complete assessments on students with hearing loss in communication development as needed; interpret assessments and determine child’s current level of auditory, language, and cognitive development.
  • Collaborate with individual listening and spoken language providers to develop therapy plans and specific long- and short-term goals and measurable objectives for both child and parent.
  • Determine activities to accomplish goals. Demonstrate knowledge of physical, cognitive, and linguistic variances in children with hearing loss.
  • Ensure confidentiality of student information following guidelines set forth by SJI HIPAA standards.
  • Maintain professional demeanor, and work cooperatively with all staff, students, and parents.
  • Uphold the professional, moral, and ethical standards and actively support the mission and values of the organization.
  • Maintain professional standards and growth through attendance at workshops, participation in appropriate professional development opportunities and reading professional literature.
  • Collaborate and relate well with others in the department to ensure integration of current best practices and continuity of program outcomes.
  • Perform other duties related to the program as requested.

Education, Qualifications and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing sciences, Deaf Education, early childhood special education, or related field.
  • Must maintain an educator license through the Indiana Department of Education. 
  • Must demonstrate a desire for ongoing professional development, including Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certification.
  • Professional experience with hearing-impaired children providing listening and spoken language therapy preferred.
