Preschool Teacher of the Deaf

For nearly two centuries, St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf (SJI) has delivered exceptional listening and spoken language solutions for children with hearing loss, reflecting the charism of the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet.
We are looking for dynamic preschool teacher to join St Joseph Institute for the Deaf. If you are an experienced Preschool teacher, we would love to speak with you. St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf is a listening and spoken language program and does not use sign language.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develop, plan, and implement an appropriate education program for each child in class. Use appropriate instructional strategies and individualizes lessons to meet needs of each child. Develop annual goals for each student designed to enable the child to reach his/her full potential in all areas. Collaborate in a positive way with other service providers, classroom teaching assistant, supervisor and departmental staff to ensure continuity and integration of curriculum at each instructional level. Partner with Teacher of the Deaf for whole group listening and spoken language instruction. Evaluate and document student progress on a regular basis. Assess family needs and develop and implement plans to benefit child and family.
- Maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning, provides differentiated experiences to meet variable needs and abilities of students, and engender motivation and enthusiasm in the classroom. Uses effective classroom management techniques; uses appropriate behavioral management strategies for his/her class and/or a specific child as set forth by SJI policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional standards and growth through attendance at workshops, participation in appropriate professional development opportunities and reading professional literature. Collaborate and relate well with others in the department to ensure integration of current best practices and continuity of program outcomes. Maintain an Indiana teaching license.
- Prepare progress reports based on assessment and observation of child development, including academic, social pragmatic, self-advocacy and listening and spoken development. Maintains necessary records and files and writes reports as required. Support in preparation of IEP goals, documentation and evaluations per standards set in department; meets with parents to discuss goals, objectives and to report progress. Maintain open communication with parents through regular contact. Keeps accurate data in conjunction with outcomes. Responsible for the preparation of other special reports as requested and required.
- Attend faculty, department meetings, as well as other meetings as requested by department supervisor or program director. Actively participate in meetings designed to ensure each child’s needs are appropriately addressed within the context of the classroom. Actively participate in recess/lunch supervision, committee assignments, parent education, and other special activities as requested. Make suggestions and provide information as needed to the IEP team.
- Maintain professional demeanor, and work cooperatively with all staff, students, and parents. Uphold the professional, moral, and ethical standards of SJI and actively support the mission and values of the SJI.
- Perform other duties related to the program as requested.
Education, Qualifications and/or Experience:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing sciences, Deaf Education, early childhood special education, or related field. Must be eligible for an educator license through Indiana Department of Education.
- Must demonstrate a desire for ongoing professional development, including Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Certification.
- Professional experience with hearing-impaired children providing listening and spoken language therapy preferred.

Pay: $40,000 - 60,000 per year
